In Bellingham WA this week, The American Museum of Radio and Electricity hosted an Electricity Day for kids featuring a Tesla Coil and a Theremin to zap basic electric concepts into the young minds. The children were able to try out the theremin afterwards.
Great Theremin Out Reach! Get 'em young, and get 'em a theremin!

They are home to an RCA Theremin Model AR 1264, you can arrange to visit and actually play it. The event was featured in the Bellingham Herald. TW member thelastpariah is on staff at the museum, and has worked hard to preserve and expand the Theremin presence there.

Thank you omhoge for sharing this with the TW community. When we do these outreach programs we bring along the Etherwave. The kids were very enthusiastic about the Theremin, although it was difficult for them to grasp the concept as to how it works. Initially, none of the kids knew what the Theremin was, but once each kid stepped up and played it, they were hooked. It got to the point where I got mobbed by kids wanting to play again and again, many of whom became impatient if one of their classmates was playing for too long.

All in all it was a great day and I can safely say hands down that the Theremin was one of the big highlights for the kids.

Excellent thelastpariah!

The response you describe makes sense, every time I've played for kids the interest is immense, the tough part is following up with the parents to make sure they get one for the really interested ones that look like they'll get hooked.

No matter what, we have to build Theremin-Awareness into the next generations. I'm really thankful for the work the Museum does for all of us. Hope more places pick up on this, the excitement will not only bring kids back to the theremin but to the museums as well.

You're absolutely right about following up with the parents. For these types of events, it's very difficult since the parents are typically working. Although I do constantly remind the kids that if they choose to go into middle or high school band/orchestra that they demand to play the Theremin.
