I must say that it was a great success! Coralie, also known as Etheremin or ThereminalC, did a perfect organization although there occurred lots of last second problems.
There were three parts in this festival:
1) An open afternoon for the grand public in order to "thereminize" the French speaking part of Switzerland. My modest theremin collection (Etherwave standard, Theremax, B3 standard, Gakken Premium) was installed on the stage, each one with a small amp and headphones so that people could try them out. I've been there in order to give hints and explanations. Then we did this "lecture" about theremin history and technology which I had scripted before in form of a dialog between Coralie and me in order to make it more interesting (Coralie looks more attractive on the stage than me...). As an introduction Dutch thereminist Thorwald Jorgensen played Herrmans' "Music from outer Space" and as a closing Coralie played three pieces accompanied by Florian Z. on Guitar, Percussion and Vocals (this guy owns also a B3 but he isn't yet ready to perform on it). There was also a "Build your own theremin" workshop for about 30 participants, organized by the Swiss TSKZ institute. The result was a small squeezing something built in a bumf roll which was closed on one side by a metalized paper as pitch antenna. People liked it... Another Swiss musician demonstrated his Eowave and Coralie's brother showed some self built infrared based "Capture devices".
2) A concert in the evening: First Nicolas Virani played some pieces from his new album, accompanied on the Guitar. Second there was a Swiss thereminist Wieslav Pipczinsky who played along some short silent movies, not only on his Moog 91a theremin, but also on the accordion and accompanied on the flute and ocarina by his wife Regula. Third there was Pamelia Kurstin with her matchless style. It was the first time that I saw her performing live. Her technique is fascinating but I didn't like her free improvisations although most of the public was ravished (no quality judgment, just a question of my personal preferences).
3) My "mobile workshop" which saw three patients: An Etherwave Standard with volume response problems and a self built Theremax kit with the volume circuit not working. Both could be healed immediately. The third was a Moog 91c with pitch field problems. The owner had to put it always against a wall in order to "decompress" it. I opened it and could show him where he had to solder an additional 4.7pF capacitor in order to normalize the field (I had none with me).
This is WORLD THEREMINIZATION at it's best. The breadth and balance of outreach to all levels of interest and skill is very impressive.
I know I am inspired hearing about this.
Good work with the open stage and theremin hospital!
I was glad to see that you refer to the theremin as "le theremin" in French and not as "le theremine".
Quelle triste mine!
Je travaille dans les mines.
En francais, a mon avis, le mot "theremine" n'est pas aussi beau que le mot "theremin".
Thanks for posting the pix.
