rockmore music in and on the air

2012 could not begin with more exciting news than that of a new CD of theremin performances and interviews with Clara Rockmore!  The album "Music In and On the Air" comes out Jan. 1, almost 31 years since it was recorded when Clara appeared on The Listening Room program on WQXR Radio in New York City.  The Nadia Reisenberg - Clara Rockmore Foundation has been working for months to digitally remaster the old reel to reel tapes and launch the CD to mark the end of Clara's centenial year.

In these never before released recordings, Clara Rockmore performs solos and chamber pieces with her sister and renowned pianist Nadia Reisenberg, the violinist Erick Friedman, and members of the Violincello Society.  The detailed liner notes include never before seen letters and photos of Leon Theremin and Clara.

This important new theremin CD is available from Qualiton and is released by Romeo Records.  Congratulations to the Foundation and Bob Sherman, host and producer of the radio show and the CD release.

Have a Happy Theremin New Year and treat yourself to this very special album.

It is simply an amazing recording. All the playing is top notch.

Just one gem of many on it is the performance of the Bach Concerto for 2 Violins - Largo, with Erick Friedman and Nadia, it is breathtaking, stunningly beautiful. They give a fresh interpretation of the piece, and this is a whole new example of Rockmore's playing. On pieces we've heard on other recordings, she and the theremin sound just a little different, nice to hear the old warhorses on a different day.

The interviews are entertaining and informative. Hearing Clara talk about playing the theremin is fantastic, and she gives some new details of theremin history. This CD is a major addition to the theremin discography.

I guess the quality in Qualiton doesn't extend to their spelling. What's a "shoping cart"?

After a couple listening-s I'm still blown away by this album. It's not 100% Clara, but its all good and hearing her in a live concert in a hall, with several other very fine musicians is a treat. If you're a fan like me, or interested in the first hand correction of some long held theremin history, you should get it. And your purchase will help support the folks who brought it to us!

Drat. I just got an e-mail that they're out of stock and my copy is backordered. I wonder how many they originally printed? I ordered mine on 12/31 before it was officially announced!

I just found out the CD will be offered for digital download (in whole or in parts) later in the year. But honestly, the liner notes are pretty cool and if it were me, I'd still want to get the physical copy. I hear they'll be shipping current orders next week.

When I ordered my copy, there was a digital download option. But it's not there anymore. It was probably a mistake and they've corrected it by now. I also got an update saying they'll be back in stock on Jan 10th, so hopefully they'll ship it right away!

Does anyone know if it will be on European stores too or if Qualiton will be the only seller?

It's available on Amazon.com for pre-order now. I added a link in our Theremin Music page under the store menu. Says it will be available on Jan 17th.

So has anyone else heard it yet? Am I the only one excited about this, and what about what she says at the end about Bob Moog?
It's held up to a couple of hearings now. I can't contain my excitement about this release.
