Hello to all again! (I started the Tibetan buddhism-theremin connexion thread). This time I'd like to ask if we think Chladni patterns - those amazing geometrical patterns assumed by sand/salt on metal/glass plates when a bow is drawn across the edge of the plate - could be formulated by frequencies emitted by a theremin if the plate was placed on the theremin and the pitch slowly raised? Anyone out there willing to try it to see? Also, I'm still trying to find a theremin player in the UK - I live in Lincoln - who would be willing to replicate a specific Tibetan mantra on theremin for me as a consciousness altering experiment? Any volunteers?!! Best wishes to all of you within the wonderous theremin playing/listening community.

Well, there are instructions for making your own Chladni plate here (http://www.instructables.com/id/Mechanical-Wave-Driver-for-Chladni-Plate/), but I note that resonant frequencies are very tight (from the instructions for using Harvard's plate, here (http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~scidemos/OscillationsWaves/BigChladniPlate/BigChladniPlate.html)) and one thing that theremins are not noted for is the ease with which specific frequencies can be sounded without even wandering a tiny bit.

I wonder if you could build something similar using iron filings and an electromagnet. That would require less "horsepower" ... i.e. you don't have to move a large metal plate.
