Just wondering, how important are Fred Nachbaur's mods for the theremax? I read that http://kevinkissinger.com/downloads/music/OhChristmasTree.mp3 was done on a theremax with the mods, however, would it sound different without them? How much different does it sound out of box? Will I be dying to make those mods, or will I not notice at all?

None of the mods described here (http://www.dogstar.dantimax.dk/theremin/tmaxmods.htm) has direct influence on the instrument's timbre, out of the last suggestion (No 5 under "More theremax tips") which will give a slightly smoother sound for very low frequencies, below ~50Hz.

So you will be able to play on the unmodified theremax and you might consider doing some or all of the mods later, following your personal and musical needs.

slyf,
Do not do any of the Fred N. suggested Modifications. Fred N. was commenting on an earlier version of the THEREMAX circuit board.
A better reference to T-Max mods is anything suggested by Kevin Kissinger on Theremin World, or the excellent Scott of PAiA. Just g'oo'gle it!
Good Luck!
