Are you thinking of Louis and Bebe Barron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_and_Bebe_Barron), the couple that created the "electronic tonalities" (*) for Forbidden Planet?

(*) A phrase used apparently to placate the Musician's Union, who did not accept that it was music. What? A tape collage of ring-modulated self-destructing circuits? Surely this is work for idle hands! Well - as the palindrome goes - Satan, oscillate my metallic sonatas.

That would be the team!

I found it very interesting, and wondered just what it was they created for those "sacrificial" circuits. As I said before, the only ones I ever "created" were unintentional and were more visual than sound producing ... the occasional reversed electrolytic cap, the shorted transistors, the fried resistors.

Perhaps the electrolytics were the most "vocal" ... some of them outgas, making a hissing sound. The "hardshell" tantalums can explode, though. Saw one of them take out a fluorescent bulb back in my old Altec Lansing Production Tech days (when they weren't a "brand" owned by some unknown Asian company cranking out computer speakers).

Good news folks - I had lost the photos for this article but just found them again. I'm uploading them in the background as I type this, so by the time you read this post, the RCA drawings should all be back online. Sorry for the inconvenience!!

Lev triangular spkr vs Interociter!

I found a picture from This Island Earth and compared it to the Lev speaker, and guess what ... you can see they are one in the same ... with a little extra paint and some fancy "tennis ball" things stuck on the corners!

I'm not sure how to post this on TW, though. Any thoughts? (not exactly worthy of a youtube post!)

I'd like to see that comparison. If only the prop masters knew what they had.
