Packing the Etherwave Pro as a carry-on

I didn't want to ship my Pro to Ethermusic, and
not trusting the cargo hold of a plane, evin with an ATA case for the pro (Which I don't have yet), I realized that I don't have anything that would allow me to take the Pro on a plane as a carry-on. The soft gigbag that came with it is way too big for that.

My solution is a soft utility / gig bag by Gator, called the Gator GX bag which meets the carry-on guidleines as long as you don't fill it to the brim, and leave a few inches empty so it collapses to the 9 inch underseat allowance. If completely filled, it measures 21 inches long, by 12 inches deep, by 12 inches high. It costs about 45 dollars at musician's friend. The airline carry-on guide says 22 x 14 x 9, or nothing that equals a number greater than 45 when you add the hight pluss depth, pluss, length. This bag equals 45 when you add it's dimensions.

Properly packed, the Pro, with it's antennas, stand, a small effects pedal, cables, and evin a couple of days worth of clothes could be packed into this bag, and it can be taken as a carry-on.

You might evin be able to squeez in an Etherwave Standard, as well.

Seeing as Moog are running the festival, can they not provide the instruments they manufacture to make the whole process a bit simpler?

I made sure to ask them about that, and they advised me that there were absolutely no etherwave pros in stock. I had hoped that they would've kept one, or two as in house muanufacturing memorabelia, or for just such occasions as this.

However, I'm sure they'll have E-Standards at the ready, but then that's an easy instrument to tote.

That's quite ridiculous. They're an instrument manufacturer who can't or won't supply the instrument they manufacture.

Well, in light of that, maybe you should start getting in touch with other performers, find out who isn't going to be travelling by plane and ask if you can use theirs before you take the risk of flying with your own.

True. But we all adjust and customize our instruments so much, it would be nice to have your own with you. Moog probably cannot legally sell as new an instument used in the festival however gentle the use.

Effects, cables, even the EWPro stand could go in checked luggage (keeping fingers crossed it will arrive with you).
The body arm and antennas will fit in a fairly small carry on suitcase, either soft or hard, wrapped in moving cloths.

I bring the manual with me to prove it's not a WMD. Other folks have reported ocasional searches but never a ban.

Just get to the airport early.
Hope everyone who can go sends us detailed reports of the festival!

...carrying a theremin through security is not a problem (I did this several times all over the world and also in the US with the PT-03 - and this one really looks like a bomb like in the movies)...

...when I got my Pro, my first task was to go to this website http://www.flightcase-onderdelen.nl/ and build me a case for my Pro (right now I am in the process of doing the same for my Octopus (http://genoqs.net)) - I am sure that there are similar services available in the US...

Not many people have customised Etherwave Pros. Manufacturers supply instruments for festivals / TV shows all the time, it's why you never see a band on TV with crappy gear - despite what they may use, the brand delivers top-of-the-range equipment. Which, no, probably isn't going to be sold as new later on. Why would it be sold?

It's just that if you claim to make something, the least you can do is keep a few of them around in case of emergencies, especially if you're running a festival based around that product. You'd expect there'd be a couple to hand.

True, sorry, by customize I also meant all those tiny adjustments we make to the various pots available on the instrument. And even without them each one can be a little different. Or maybe I'm different and just prefer my own.

Even though they are still assembling the final run, they just may not have many they are willing to risk as loners every new box you open you have to treat as used and take a loss on. Hopefully Moog will have the current Standard which is still in production, available at least for open mic nights. And they are not big like Yamaha or Roland, bet they don't keep a lot of extra stock in house.

I have to hand it to them though, it may not be perfect yet, but they have been improving the festival this time round. Very curious what it will be like.

And there is a theremin orchestra on the agenda - group participation. If they're not reminding participants to bring an instrument for this, it is a fair assumption that they'll be providing etherwaves and amps.

Still, if I were going, I'd email them and check before I went.

I'd also seriously consider taking something other than an etherwave to help reduce interference problems.

...ok, now I have to say it:

>there is a theremin orchestra on the agenda -
>group participation. (...)
>it is a fair assumption that they'll be
>providing etherwaves and amps.

...what about introducing a new theremin model at the festival? A new 'EtherProVox'...

...and let everyone attending have one at a special introductary price at the beginning; this would take care of a lot of requests, wishes as well as travel-packing-problems and the provision of instruments for the group-events...

;o)
