A Beginning Theremin

I would like some advice on buying my first theremin. I studied music and can play instruments, so I do have some musical skill and knowledge. Many Thanks, CajunTheremin

- Moog: Etherwave and Etherwave Plus

- Dan Burns: B3 Pro (not the cheaper "B3 DeLuxe"!)

- Subscope (custom built theremins by Dominik Bednarz)

I own a standared Etherwave along with the B3 Pro and a Subscope.  I would be happy to offer my novice opinion on any of them ;^)

Get a Moog!

I agree on the Moog.  I think you get the most bang for your buck and you can go a long way learning on one.  The B3 Pro has some limitations on the lower end of the scale with a tone that can not be changed.  The Subscope may be the next step once you have played for a few years.

I was just noticing that on Ebay that a black EW standard usually goes for about $50.00 more than an ash or mahogany finish.  What's up with that?  Is it because of the need to use sealer and additional sanding of the wood?  I used to refinish antique furniture for a living and sealing and sanding was also necessary for a natural finish.    

I would hate to see what they would charge if they sold a precision crafted, solid walnut case with a fine finish like my B3 Pro!

I own a black EW and the finish definitely isn't worth the extra money! I bought mine second-hand, so I didn't pick the color. The finish seems like black stain, perhaps it requires a few more steps to apply compared to the "natural" finish? Looks good though.

Then, they'd have to bump up the price to an even grand ($1000 USD)!  It'd be funny if it wasn't actually possible.
