hello all, i'm a 4th year university student at glasgow caledonian attempting to build a thremin type instrument using accelerometer sensors in two hand held units.

the left unit when move left and right across the axis will dictate the tone of the sound. the right unit when moved up and down controls the volume. the low position will equate to zero volume or off. i intend to transport the data via a serial connection to a pc which will be converted to midi using delphi. the delphi program will also allow the user adjust range and sensitivity of hand units and diplay note position relative to a piano roll on screen.

Did you know that you have made the design left-handed?

Thereminists generally use the dominant hand to control pitch, as it requires finer motor control.

Hmm. A thought. Rather than a handheld unit, could the sensors be incorporated into a glove, leaving the fingers free to operate some other device.

Thereminist Wilco Botermans wears strain gauges on the backs of his fingers to control a bank of moogfoogers whilst playing.

It might be interesting to combine the two technologies.
