calling all Keppinger tube theremin builders

Thanks for the explaination. I think I understand. I have had good luck so far with theremins and coil winding, but honestly I am totally in the dark when it comes to the mysteries of inductance and frequency oscillation. nearly every build has at least afew momentents of complete frustration from dealing with what seems to be supernatural forces.
that being said... I plan on following the keppinger coil instructions as closely as possible, so Q shouldn't be an issue( i hope.)
I have found a few more thing that need clarification though:
* The coil form diameter for the large volume and pitch coils (L2 and L6) is different on the two parts list Ive found. Jeff Sparks parts list (http://www.thereminworld.com/files/projects/mktheremin/mkcomponents.pdf) has the form diameter at 3.30" while Phillip Neidlinger's excel parts spread sheet (http://www.neidlinger.us/keppinger.htm) lists a 3.1" diameter form. Both list the same gauge wire and # of windings??
So I guessing that the ocillators are a little forgiving and the inductance doesnt need to be dead on. ?
* Phil's list also says L1 has a double wrap with layers for craft paper soaked in shellac between windings. the other only mentions one winding, tapped at 50 turns. ? any thoughts?

Any suggestions of where to find phenolic coil forms that size. I was just planning on using my stock coil form material :heavy cardboard tubes covered with shellac or interlux wood sealer (a clear oil based sealer used to "prime" wood before applying varnish). They have about a 3.25-3.27" diameter. closer to the size stated on the jsparks list.

Also what size chassis did mr keppinger use?.. and beside phils page are there any other photos or diagrams of the layout? I want to stick with an already winning formula. Thanks for the help.

Chobbs - Apparently, 3.10" is the CORRECT diameter tube form for the large pitch and volume coils. The 3.30" is a typo due to working late at night after twelve hour work days. My apologies.

I believe the tubing Mr. Keppinger used can be found here (http://www.redarrowhobbies.com/paper_body_tubes.htm) on the Red Arrow Hobbies website.

Measuring the tubes on mine, the correct choice is the RAHBT30 tube.

wow thanks, that makes things easy...
I never thought of a model rocketry supply. I was sure those forms were some kind of arcane radio surplus.
So would RAHBT15 be the tube used for the 1.6" coil(L1) and RAHBT22 would be 2.25" (L4,5)?

RAHBT15: 1.525" ID X 0.055"

RAHBT22: 2.175" ID X 0.021"

After taking a second look, I think that RAHBT21 is a better choice. 2.14" id x.06" wall thickness = 2.26" outer diameter. pretty close to the 2.25" listed.

GOTO kepptheremins on my yahoo group. There is a LOT of assembled information there, ie photos, pix, schematics, etc.

Be prepared to do ALOT of coil winding.

Winding coils is the fun part... well at least its the cheap part. the $300+ order to Antique radio supply is gonna be the hardest step for me.
I just ordered the coil forms though. I already have a spool of # 32 magnet wire, so ill start on the large coils first. ill keep everyone posted...

I couldnt find Philip's Yahoo group. Could someone please post a link or directions where to find it.

Also would anyone be able to measure the dimenions of the kep chassis?

Chobbs - Yes, I can.

I don't have the original Kepp cabinet drawn in CAD, but I could if you'd like.

However, I did do some concept drawings for Kyle (whatever happened to him?) back in June. They were of an RCA style cabinet made to fit the Keppinger components. I even had a couple of versions for making the legs a separate piece or detachable.

Chobbs ... what's the mystery?

f = 1/(2pi*sqrt(LC)) When Xc and Xl are equal, you have resonance. Add a slight pulse to kick the thing into oscillation once in a while and you have an oscillator. :)
