Project Suggestions?

I did see some earlier similar threads, but I wanted to ask from a slightly different 'what I am looking for'.

So, over Christmas my girlfriend got a Gakken 'Mini-Theremin' to play with. As anyone who has seen one of these can guess, it is really more of a toy then an instrument. It has no second antenna and seems to have a range of less then an octave.

I kinda miss electronic projects (EE by education, but programmer by career) so I though it might be fun to build something that would let her play with something a bit closer to an actual theremin but not something expensive or high quality.

So my question is this... are there any good kits/plans out there that are worth trying? We don't need anything 'good', but something that had a wider range and second antenna would be nice so we can get enough of a feel to decide if we want to invest in something nice.

Thanks ^_^

In that case I strongly recommend the Jaycar theremin kit. It's a complete theremin with pitch antenna and a volume plate (instead of a loop, but it works also). After building and careful tuning the coils (which is a bit tricky and requires a multimeter) you can get 3 playable octaves. Pitch fine tuning is done by varying slightly the length of the telescopic pitch antenna (only by a few millimeters).

The kit including housing, antennae, circuit board, speaker and all components can be ordered for around 45Us$ here: http://www.jaycar.us/productView.asp?ID=KC5475

I needed just a bit more than 1 hour to solder it and get it working. A series of pics are available on my facebook profile (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=354&id=1742377501)
