Flickr: Busking with a theremin

The thing on his belt is a Danelectro Honeytone mini-amp. They sell the same model just down the road from my house.

Wow - thanks for the quick answer! So then this rig is probably entirely battery-powered. Have you tried this mini amp?

His instrument looks almost exactly like the TECI solid-state theremin model 147 in the downloadable instruction manual.

my friend owns a honeytone mini amp and it works great for guitars. we used to walk around the beach for hours playing our electric instruments through it. i'm sure a theremin would sound fine coming from one, but it doesn't get very loud.

I can just imagine one of you wearing an optical theremin on your back and the other one playing it as you walk down the beach... :)

I'm happy with my little Honeytone. It was cheap, something like 25-30 dollars. Sure, the tone is a little distorted, but it does fine in an informal setting and it has tone adjustments to play with. I used mine with my Etherwave in my hotel room at the EtherMusic 2005 festival, for practice. Practical for traveling, weighs 2 or 3 pounds, and I think it would be fine for busking. Reviews of it somewhere say that it can suddenly stop working if dropped on its head-- might be good to have a 2nd one handy.

Hi, I'm new here. I took the picture that's posted above. I'd never heard of a theremin before, but as a result of seeing this guy play, I've been poking around to see what I can learn about theremins.

This theremin is being played by Arthur Harrison, a member of The Cassettes.

I don't know him, or anyone in the band. I just saw them playing a few songs a couple weeks ago.
