Taking a cue from Carolina Eyck, Sting is now playing a theremin live in concert.

According to the Interwebs and OC Weekly, Sting brought out a theremin during the song "Moon Over Bourbon Street" (iTunes) during a recent stop on his "Symphonicity" tour.

So, here are some World Thereminization kudos to Sting for helping spread theremin awareness!

I have loved hearing Rob play Bernard Herrmann's Scene d'Amour from Vertigo every time he's included it in his theremin shows. Rob's right, it should have been scored for theremin!

Now he is finally able to correct this errant fluke of music history, and with a big live orchestra! St Luke's Orchestra will be featuring this piece with Rob as soloist in the special July 4th concert at Caramoor Center. Caramoor is the former home and part of the public legacy of Lucie Bigelow Rosen, the most important patron of Leon Theremin and his invention.

Thorwald Jorgensen

Dutch Thereminist Thorwald Jorgensen has hit quite a stride with his 2009-2010 concert tours. Spanning styles and venues, Thorwald will be performing intimate classics in the Cultureel Cafe Bacchus in Aalsmeer (near Amsterdam), and as soloist with a wind orchestra at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, famous for it"s splendid acoustics.

The Symphonic Wind Orchestra ATH grew out of the immense popularity of wind orchestras in the Netherlands. They introduce new soloists across the country in commissioned arrangements of orchestral classics and will be featuring Thorwald in concerts this year.

Welcome to ThereminWorld Thorwald,
and Viva World Thereminization!

After seeing creative solo uses of the cell phone in electronic music making by Bora Yoon who shared Armen's NYC concert, TW's own DiggyDog, and thousands of private folks who've downloaded various iPhone music applictaions, it was only a matter of time before some formal ensembles should form around the mobile phone witting their own software for it.

The Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPhO) had a concert last week which got a write up in the New York Times. "Then the musicians began to swing their arms in wide circles, creating rising and falling waves of electronic sound…" - New York Times review of Dec. 3 concert with video.

The Michigan Mobile Phone Ensemble, at the University of Michigan, has a concert tomorrow night. They are performing original works on existing and original software using every feature of the iPhone from the mic and touch screen to internals like GPS, wireless sensor, and accelerometer.

Jakub Ciupinski controls drum machines with 2 theremins

Composer Jakub Ciupinski has created a rig with 2 theremins that he uses to trigger drum machines in live performances. He's posted a video on vimeo explaining the setup and demonstrating his control technique.

Ciupinski will perform live on September 16th as part of New Music 101, Metropolis Ensemble's interactive concert on September 16, 2009 at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. If you're anywhere near the Big Apple in September, this sounds like a concert not to be missed!
