Yes, that's Jon Stewart doing his best "air theremin" impersonation! A couple of our eagle-eyed members noticed this theremin reference on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart recently and I thought it deserved front-page attention. The reference is about 2 minutes into the video, but the whole clip is well worth watching. I won't spoil how Jon turns a rant about the war in Afghanistan into a theremin reference, so you'll have to see for yourself.

photos Jennifer Tse
Blogger Jennifer Tse has been reporting on the diverse buskers
playing in the Toronto Transit Commission - TTC. Featured this week was Black Santa, aka Jeff Burke, a professional bassoonist who's been playing in the TTC for 20 years and added the theremin to his act this year. Jeff, is now not just the only subway bassoonist but the the only known subway thereminist in Toronto.
Merging his diverse music experience with the holiday song book resulted in Jeff's album
Black Santa.
We'll need to keep an ear out for those aether tones among the clicking hooves of Santa's raindeer up on the roof!

PBS 'History Detectives' plans visit
Investigators with the PBS television series History Detectives are looking into a Santa Fe man's suspicion that he owns one of the first electronic instruments known as theremins.
The show's host, Elyse Luray, and her crew plan to visit Santa Fe on Nov. 23 to share results of their probe into whether the man has one of fewer than six original theremins built by Leon Theremin, a news release said.
The only instrument played without touching, the theremin "makes eerie, ethereal music, the kind that creates uncertainty and suspense in movie sound tracks," the statement said.
The Santa Fe man bought his theremin through e-Bay, according to the release.
Robert Moog, creator of the electric synthesizer, was quoted as having called the theremin "a vital cornerstone of our contemporary music technology."

This sure 'creates uncertainty and suspense' for us. If it's true and he's not a TW member yet, hope he joins and tells us about it!

From Examiner.com:
"From the other side of the coin (and the opposite end of the country, namely, the never used city of Fairbanks, Alaska), comes Dear Lemon Lima and as the movie's title so adroitly points out: if ever there was a movie that reserved its rightful spot next to the sweet and tartly candy at your local confectionary's, it would be this film. The plot is very simple. It concerns a girl who can't come to terms with the fact that her boyfriend has dumped her. She hasn't moved on. The girl in this case happens to be 13, her crush 14, and the endeared from the title, well, a "friend" that might fill Warren Schmidt's Ndugu with a dose of reality. Add a cast of supporting (and very supportive) ninth grade misfits--including one named Nothing who, aptly, plays the Theremin (!!)--set them on a competitive collision course of self-discovery worthy not just of an Ancient Greek odyssey, but also of a Revenge of the Nerds comparison, and you have a movie that's, ahem, as much about the heartbreaking cruelty of life as it is about the erratic beauty and wonder of it...."
Check out the film's website and watch the trailer here.

In his reivew for The Guardian of the book "The Reverend Guppy's Aquarium: From Joseph Frisbie to Roy
Jacuzzi, How Everyday Items Were Named for Extraordinary People" by Philip Dodd, What it says on the tin,
Ian Sansom mentions:
""
Once Dodd has established his modus operandi - a couple of interviews, a nice bit of potted history, some
amusing digressions - he goes off all over the place. Off to Belgium, for example, to the town of Dinant,
birthplace of Adolphe Sax, where you can drink Sax beer in Bar Sax on rue Sax. A quick detour on the
theremin (Leon Theremin), the sousaphone (John Philip Sousa) and the Moog synthesiser (Robert Moog), and
then we're off to California to meet Roy Jacuzzi.

The Octopus Project has been getting lots of aether attention lately.
Dan Bennis wrote a detailed review of their latest album for Impose Magazine.
""
The Octopus Project are self-proclaimed noise-rockers who could fall into any number of genres, whether electronic, indie-rock, jam-rock, or post-rock. Fortunately, Hello, Avalanche ... allows further space for what separates this band from most other electro-based bands- Yvonne Lambert’s virtuosic use of the theremin. It’s all over Hello, Avalanche, taking over duty for what previously might have been a dependable keyboard part and leaving the rest of the band to fend for the “noise” and “rock” they’ve also devoted themselves to.

In Season 8 of the hit comedy M.A.S.H., Hawkeye adds a "therem" to Klinger's "in" during a Scrabble game. I'm not sure which surprises me more... the pop culture reference to a theremin, the fact that they spelled it right, or Hawkeye's explanation and imitation.
Check out this forum post for the link to the video.
Thanks David and Jon!

On his CD, Waters includes a Christmas song with a theremin and a twist on "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" called "Santa Claus is a Black Man," one of the few holiday tunes around to mention Kwanzaa.
