ThereminWorld owner Jason Barile is not only a theremin player,
but also very active in environmental issues and a skilled HyperMiler.
"A hypermiler is somebody who is dedicated to getting
the maximum mileage they can from their car," Jason told ABC news in Raleigh N.C.
Besides supporting ThereminWorld and writing extensively on the Theremin,
Jason has been putting his tips and
passion for personal action to help the environment out on the web.
His on line commentary about his HyperMiling practice caught the interest of Tim Nelson at Channel 11 News in N.C. and Jason is featured in the news story "Hypermiling in the Triangle" they aired on television July 10th.
Good Going Jason!
Thanks for helping our planet as well as our Theremin Community.

Perhaps May should be declared ThereminWorld Month.
The Theremin World Forums will be five years old on May 16th.
The site started out as Theremin Home Page in 1995, and was later redesigned and re-launched with its present design in 2000. Site Owner Jason Barile added new code and technology enhancements throughout 2000 to 2003 when forum discussions were finally added. The site has continued to run on the 2003 code base to this day.
The first forum post was by Jason at 12:11 AM 5/16/2003, and revealed his long tradition of late night TW work. Initially there was no membership provider for the site and all posts had an optional name and e-mail field. There have been over 16,000 posts in almost 3,000 topics since then. It now forms the largest Theremin Knowledge Base on the web.
User profiles were launched on 2/13/2005 and logins were optional at first. This is why the older forum entries sometimes show as "Guest". As membership, traffic, and visibility increased, member logins became required and also enabled TW members to get to know each other better. This also allowed self-editing of user entries and made the forums something of an AETHER-WIKI covering all aspects of theremin building and playing. The Construction and Aerial Fingering topics are still among most visited.
There are currently 1,833 registered users at ThereminWorld from all parts of the planet, and they form the biggest asset to the site and our community.
Every day concert postings, news items, obscure theremin sightings and questions of all sorts at all levels of experience appear in the TW forum and find generous answers and assistance from our users. It has become one of the most widely recommended and read sources of help and information in the Global Theremin Community. Perhaps even more important connections made here have lead to real world, face-to-face meetings of many TW members and has helped initiate long lasting friendships among the lovers of this touch-less instrument.
Many thanks to Jason for building and supporting this web site, and major kudos to the many members who've provided so much information over the years!

Last year saw a lot of new members. We had over 500 folks join!
And we've already had 35 folks join ThereminWorld this month.
The forums have seen lots of questions and helpful answers from members new and old.
We still have not met all of our new members. So TW founder, Jason, has started a
"Roll Call"
form thread for this year to help us get to know each other.
Please feel free to introduce yourself if you haven't yet.
And many thanks to all of our members for keeping ThereminWorld an interesting and helpful resource for our great community!

ThereminWorld's newest staff members - We're thrilled to announce the recent addition of two new interns at ThereminWorld! After an extended interview process TW founder Jason finally welcomed Stella and Claire on board this week.
Besides starting on a report on linearity in miniature theremins, they've already completely reorganized the schedule at the home office. ( Please understand if we're a little behind in things for a bit :)
Congratulations Jason!

Lydia Kavina and TW founder Jason Barile.
Born today, Sept. 8th, Lydia Kavina has been both a driving and a preserving force for the theremin, it's music, history and culture for over three decades.
After early exposure to the instrument with it's inventor during her childhood, she continued to develop into a world class musician on all levels and has expanded the repertory for the theremin both through commissions and as a composer in her own right. Her teaching, instructional videos, concretizing, recordings and workshops have spread awareness of the instrument, and laid the foundation for many new thereminists and established it for subsequent generations. She's played more different models of theremin than any other player and has been a significant influence on theremin builders around the world. Lydia's performance collaborations with other players and her incredible flexibility in playing styles has broadened the musical realms for serious theremin music as well as helped to support the careers of other thereminists.
Best wishes to Lydia for a joyous birthday and many, many more!
[Thanks to GordonC for the datebook reminder.]

Without Bob Moog's fascination with the theremin and deep respect for it's players we might well not be here
today discussing playing the aether.
Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry for him:
""
Dr. Robert Arthur Moog (pronounced moug to rhyme with "vogue")
(May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005)
Robert Moog constructed his own theremin as early as 1949. Later he described a theremin in the hobbyist
magazine Electronics World and offered a kit of parts for the construction of the Electronic World's Theremin,
which became very successful.
In the late 1980s Moog repaired the original theremin of Clara Rockmore, an accomplishment which he considered
a high point of his professional career. He also produced, in collaboration with first wife Shirleigh Moog,
Mrs. Rockmore's album, The Art of the Theremin. Dr. Moog was a principal interview subject in the award winning
documentary film, THEREMIN- An Electronic Odyssey, the success of which led to a revival in interest in the
theremin instrument.
Moog Music went back to its roots and once again began manufacturing theremins. Thousands have been sold to
date and are used by both professional and amateur musicians around the globe. In 1996 he published another
do-it-yourself theremin guide. Today, Moog Music is the leading manufacturer of performance-quality theremins.
""
We owe him a lot, there'll never be another like him.
Thank you Bob, and we miss you.

I hope I'm not the last person on the planet to see this video, because it means I can help to my part in spreading the word. I don't apologize for the off-topic blog post. This i my best platform for reaching the most eyes, and this is something I feel very strongly about.
I watched Al Gore's video "An Inconvenient Truth" tonight and found it to be both fascinating and terrifying. If you haven't seen it yet and you're the type of person who doesn't want to live under 1000 ft of ice or water, buy/rent/borrow it today. The facts are plain as day - global warming is real and we can do something to slow it down or even reverse it.
Learn more at ClimateCrisis.net.
And now back to our irregularly scheduled theremin blogging...

Thanks to all who have continued to keep the site hopping over the past couple of months. I've been traveling a lot for work and am finally home for an extended period. I'm still catching up on personal life, family, and e-mail. I've done a minor bit of maintenance on the site tonight - hopefully you'll see less canned meat substitute around here for a while until I can get captchas installed. I'll wade through contest entries next. Great to see you all stuck around!
-Jason
