Hey there :)
I'm basically doing a collage course at the moment, part of which is to build a digital device, using chips and circuts and so on :)
Anyhow, basically iw as wondering, can i cuild what is effectivly a digitcal theremin ?
and also can anybody suggest a good place to start looking for design's and topics i should read ?:)

http://www.oldtemecula.com/theremin/ might be useful to you.
A fundamental design decision will be the means by which you detect the gestures of the performer. You will likely need some kind of a/d function in order to create digital input to your process. Your final output would be either MIDI data, digital signal data, or analog data (would need a d/a converter).
I am not an EE so you can take my comments with a grain of salt. You may also want to read the threads on this website for ideas on Theremin design and construction.
Good luck!

Here's a webpage I stumbled upon last night with schematics for an analog AND a digital theremin. Unfortunately, there aren't any sound files to give an idea what it sounds like.
