Theremin housing question.

Hey everyone.

I am currently building a PAiA theremin and am very excited about it. I am housing it on my own and have an idea for something a little different for it. I was wondering if it would be possible to house everything except for the antenna in one box, then, from that box, have a heavily shielded cable going to a piece of wood with the antennas on it.

this would work great for me because i could then keep the main portion of the theremin on the floor by all my pedals (i play guitar) and just have the antennas on the mic stand, which wouldn't be as heavy and easy to knock over.

so is what i want to do possible? i don't need to do it, it just kind of seems like a cool idea.

If nothing else, it would be a great experiment, but if it does work, it might be cool to find a way to mount the controls in a narrow, vertical mini box that could clamp to the pole, as well to allow easy adjustment. You might find it easy to make the theremin box / base out of wood, and then use non conductive PVC pipe, or hollow wooden dowels to mount the antennas to. Don't forget the metal plate for under the circuit board.

Kevin, I'm sure your watching, any reason why running long leads between antennas, and floor level circuit might not work?

The RS theremin site has a picture of the volume and pitch controls as separate from the theremin itself. I don't think that you will have a problem.

I am currently building Art Harrison's 126 tube theremin and my chassis is seperated from the antennas. The chassis is sitting on a wooden box (gutted replica of an RCA gramaphone).

I plan on connecting the chassis to the antennas inside the box using BNC connectors. Any reason this wouldn't work?

I just finished my chassis and am going to start the wiring tomorrow--- ill let you know what happens from my experiment with it and pictures when its done.

That is very similar to the Anthony Henk theremin you can find pictures of Lydia Kavina playing. Note that the pitch antenna is very long, and is located further away from the player than normal. It is an extending antenna.

Here (scroll down) is a good photo of Lydia Kavina playing her Henk theremin:

From the looks of it, I'd bet the pitch and volume circuits are in separate boxes. Note also that the mount appears to be a photographer's tripod, not a microphone stand.

(BTW, I suspect that what the author says about the Theremax is an isolated slander.)
