It might be nice to have a page (sticky topic?) where people can post backing tracks/ sheet music for music that they like playing on the theremin.

I dunno- just an idea, as I hear it can be hard finding music that's ideal for the instrument.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea, but only Jason knows if he can afford the storage space and bandwidth.

Depending on what you like, I don't think it's that hard to find music to play on the theremin. One problem is, at least in the U.S., when you record and post music in a public place, you run into copyright issues. In the U.S., virtually everything written and recorded after 1921 is protected by copyright laws. It's legal to play them in the privacy of your own home, but that't's about it. Otherwise, you have to obtain a license from the copyright holder and possibly pay royalties.
Of course you can always just take your chances, but, if the copyright holder wants to press the issue, they can take you to the cleaners.

Jeff, you called out some great issues. So, how about a compromise?

I've added a "Theremin Repetoire" page (see the link under the "Learn" menu).

What I'd like the theremin community to do is help us build the page by contributing lists (and links if possible) to songs you feel are appropriate to play on the theremin. Suggesting a song for the list is easy - just visit the page and click the "suggest a listing" link.

As Jeff suggested, we unfortunately don't have the storage or bandwidth at this time to host actual music files. Even if we did, I'd rather not get into the mess of dealing with copyright issues.

BUT, if we can list names of songs along with links to existing MIDI files, audio files, or sheet music, perhaps we can help budding thereminists expand their repetoire beyond just "The Swan" :)

Thanks again for the suggestion! With the new database-backend, it's a snap to add new pages like this.
