I pushed some changes tonight, so you'll likely find some bugs I missed.  No new features, but this brings the site up to the latest version of the platform I'm using so it'll be easier for me to push out more changes in the coming days...

Update 2/21 @ 6:43am - I just fixed the problem with the forum editor not showing up for most people.  I have also seen some problems with logging in (sometimes you have to do it twice) and I've noticed that the views count on forum posts isn't updating.  If you're able to post and you see any additional problems, please let me know.  Thanks for your patience!

Update 2/22 @ 6:55am - Fixed the forum post views count problem.

You seem to have fixed my logging in problems with Safari on OSX (the only combo that didn't work reliably) and yes! I can post now, from OSX and iOS. :-)

Glad I'm not the only one using Safari.

Woot!  Thanks for the bug report Gordon, and thanks for helping check out the site's core functionality John!

Really... new features coming soon!

I've fixed a couple more issues today.  There was a problem with replying to forum posts if anyone had requested a notification of replies.  A bunch of site pages were still using the old tag cloud code and throwing errors too.

The e-mail problem I fixed might have been the source of the issue where sometimes new users weren't getting their registration mails.

Please let me know if you find anything else not working correctly.

thanks!

Jason

Just one minor thing - (I am using Explorer 8 under XP Pro) ..

I have noticed in the past that the thread buttons (First, back, next, last) did strange things at times, and I usually navigate using the page numbers, which always works..

I now notice that the "first" button doesnt do anything anymore (in the past I could click it repeatedly and usually get to page 1 eventually)

With threads extending to extreme lengths (its interesting - the only other sites I have found this common is those on philosophy or the like ;-) fast access to first and last pages is perhaps becoming more important to me.

Just a quick other comment / idea .. Back in the days when number of postings in a thread was limited, and one had to deliberately create a continuation thread, it was a pain.. BUT.. There were some advantages (retrospectively).. I wonder if an automated thread 'sequencer' would make things more managable.. Something which after N postings, closes the thread and creates a new thread, inserting a link to the new thread as the final posting on the closed thread, and a link to the closed posting as the first posting on the new thread..

However, by making requests like this, I realise that I may be asking you to give up your day job and to charge a hefty membership fee to keep you solvent.

;-)

(I have tried switching to the latest FireFox, but cant get anything here to work with that - cannot even log-in! .. Putting this down to me being stupid, at least until I either know im being stupid or am reasonably sure that im not being stupid! ;-)

Thanks for the report and suggestions.  I will have to dig up an XP machine to reproduce that, but it is just a simple HTML link, so I cannot imagine why it wouldn't work.  Is anyone else having that problem?

As for splitting threads... Is your goal to make it easier to navigate through the thread?  What if I displayed more than 10 posts per page?  I know I need to re-write the forums code at some point (or move to a pre-packaged forums system), so I'll take this under consideration.  I just want to make sure I understood what the pain point is.

Having recently left Microsoft and the IE team, I now feel more comfortable asking, "have you tried Chrome?"  ;)

""have you tried Chrome?"  ;-) Jason.

Yes, I have - its now removed.. I absolutely and without any reservation hereby declare that i HATE it!

Dont ask me why I hate it, it just never did what I wanted / expected.. Because I ONLY like Windows XP Pro (have tried the others) and MS isnt supporting later versions of IE on this - 8 is as high as I can go..

So I am forced to change browser - Tried Google, but now use IE, Firefox and Torr.. Firefox and Torr (basically the same engine I believe) are generally ok - I think there must be some cookee problem or whatever thats not allowing me to log into TW using them..

Funny thing is that I find the Google browser on Android quite usable - but I only do simple stuff on the tablet, dont have loads of tabs or apps etc running..

Fred.

UPDATE:

My android browser lets me log in - So it must be my PC I think.. Sorry Jason, I think this is a false alarm! Hadnt thought of logging in on my tablet -

Oh, I spoke too soon.. Logging in is ok, but I couldnt make postings using my tablet - The editor is open as a box under "post reply" - (as usual) but the box is only able to fit one character.. oh, it gets the characters ok (?) but you cant read any words you write! (Android Ver 4.0.3) - not sure if you are interested in bug reports on android OS .. if not, let me know ;-) ... More info - I was using a usb keyboard - unplugging this and using the screen keyboard I can see words on its monitor (only one letter at a time in the editor) but as soon as I place a space, the keyboard monitor displays a load of gibberish, and no more following typing appears, even though it appears, one letter at a time, in the editor box.....

Looks like the editor isnt happy with Android, or Android isnt happy with it. Just for the hell of it, I will do my next posting using the android notepad, paste this into the editor, and see if this works - but this can wait.. Only reason im looking at any of this is I may be traveling a bit by train soon, and TW would be a way to pass the time...
