Not everyone is able to listen to different types of music in different ways that are appropriate for the appreciation of the particular composition. I do not listen to LUNA PARK with the same ears with which I listen to Richard Strauss' "Dance" from SALOME.

I'll bet you anything you like, Gunnar doesn't either.

Blaming a critic's inability to appreciate a piece of music is the last recourse of a mediocre musician.

Never really got the genre classifications sorted in my head - "new age" "ambient" "electronic" - Ive given up now - theres music I love from every genre (not just the above), and music I hate - but most music regardless of which genre is "ok" - but not much more than that.

And I cannot explain why some pieces "grab" me, while other pieces which inspire people who IMO usually have "good taste" leave me unmoved, whilst other which pieces which I love, like Tangerine Dream drive others nuts - "its so boring!" 

I dont know if Tangerine Dream is "ambient" or what.. But its the "things" going on in the music which make it interesting to me, I think.. Yes, there are long sustained chords, there are repeating sequences.. but with that there is always change and evolution and sounds which keep it alive..

LUNA PARK, IMO, has one thing, and only one, which gives it life - This is Ameys voice and theremin..

Maybe it comes down to predictability - most ambient music I dislike is, to me, completely predictable - And after hearing it once I have no interest in hearing it again - ever. I have every Tangerine Dream album, and couldnt count the number of times I have played each from beginning to end.. I know every note and every sound, but I still get something (LOL, I cant what ;-) "new" every time I play a TD.

I would listen to Amy's "ambient" music more than once - But if she wasnt there, I would never bother to listen to anything produced by the band again after hearing it once.

Sorry - It doesnt do it for me :-(   I wish it did.  I will say no more on this.. Theres no accounting for taste (particularly mine, LOL ;-) , and no way to keep everyone happy.

Fred, (or anyone for that matter) I will never get mad if you tell me that you don't like what I do or whatever... I appreciate the honesty and the comfortable feeling between each of us to be honest. I treasure that... :)

I thought it was very nicely done.  It is consistent with Amethyste's and Gunnar's typical style.  Personally, I'm glad Gunnar decided to "bend" a little.

You also have to remember you're listening to the recording at 128kbps - not in it's full sonic glory.  You are missing some of the information that would otherwise provide greater separation of the various elements.

@Jeff S: You bring up an interesting point which is so often overlooked when it comes to audio reproduction, and compression. I would really love to hear this piece in full, lossless format. Perhaps our observations would be slightly different then.

@Amethyste: I think you'll find that the above reviews are, indeed, quite honest, and to he point. To date, you've not produced a single rendering that I did not enjoy. :)

Funny how taste in movies can be a rather commonly shared thing, but taste in music is much more unpredictable.  I discovered female metal a while ago and before that never thought I would have taken to e.g. Drain STH - so even I don't know what I like. ;-)

Most people THINK they are very eclectic in their musical tastes and that they can potentially enjoy music of all genres. This is rarely true. 

"Do you like Bach and Mozart?"

"Oh, sure. I don't necessarily like everything they wrote, but I like some things."

"Can you name a single piece of music that either one of these men ever composed?"

"...........well....no....not off hand..."

"How about something like contemporary jazz? Do you like that?"

"Yes."

"Who are your favorite contemporary jazz musicians? Who have you heard?"

".............."

The fact is, most people like the music that has been packaged and spoon fed to them by the music industry. They usually fall back on the old, meaningless platitude, "I may not know anything about music or art, but I know what I like."

Most of the time it's the other way around: they LIKE what they KNOW and have little interest in discovering anything beyond that. 

I remember years ago reading an interview in one of the trade magazines with TANGERINE DREAM founder, Edgar Froese, who at that time was furious because the music industry had dubbed the group "New Age". He seemed to feel that his music should be categorized with the best of Mahler and Hindemith and Webern.
