It can be used as oscillator:

... and the phrases "With 1.5V supplies, certain problems can occur to stop oscillation" and "A load with sufficient self inductance will always self-start" inspires hope that the scheme will oscillate with a lower tap ratios (less than the recommended 40%), which generally means the better frequency stability.

I was thinking more of the electronic trombone:

Tune each of the 6 speakers and ports to one note each.  Kind of a tiny electronic pipe organ.  Lots of acoustic power because the speaker and port would be operating at the resonance point.  The 25 ohm speakers seem like a problem though, not sure where one might get those.

ILYA, I think you are doing some really fascinating stuff and wish we were neighbors.

dew - the 3909 sells for about $4 apiece being an antique. lol The 555 is 10 cents and can generate some really nice wave shapes as in my sample which has not been acoustically developed, that would make it sound much better.

Is the 3909 a triangle wave as is my 555 wave shape off of pin 2/6 ?

Dang, after hearing that, it might be a project I may go back to as the sound is musical. dew this is the effect I mentioned about sending an audio wave shape on a LED beam to a phototransistor and ending up with something better. Wonder what I get sending it through my theremin Harmonic Enhancer board. The pitch varies from optical variations of light level.

I have been avoiding theremin stuff and my second Clara pcb the past couple of months, it seems like a dying art.

Edit:  Talking about six notes, here is another method of sound generation 1 I did a while back using heterodyne oscillators and a binary weighted PIC output to select the musical notes. Then who could forget pitch popping sound generation 2 Most kids today just don't know the fun of electronics with the little pieces.

So sad.  It's a pretty neat IC.  Blinks LEDs like nobody's business.
