LOL ;-)

Sad, but true!  -- But also perhaps a slightly 'tilted' comparison, as we never had internet forums when the telephone was invented....

'Just googled "theremini"

The 2nd entry in the returned list was http://www.thereminworld.com/moog-music-theremini-theremin which is an advert for this toy and only has a link to Randy's original, mostly complimentary review.'-Fred

I've just done the same and it comes in at No.8.

Kind of feel like Fluff Freeman here...:-)

I'm pretty stunned that Moog Inc. didn't hire even one real, actual player to show it off at freaking NAMM of all places where - when it comes to keyboards, guitars, drums, etc. - companies universally snag the best players their limited money can afford.

LOL ;-) .. Ignore me, im just a trouble stirrer! ;-)

I love the seller "PMT Online" - LOL ;-) .... Reminds me of an evangelical magazine from the Moody Bible Institute our family got in South Africa (My father was a Baptist Missionary) it was called "The Moody Monthly" - LOL ;-) ... But piles were lying all round the house, and kind of discouraged us from bringing friends home when we got to our teens..

"I'm pretty stunned that Moog Inc. didn't hire even one real, actual player to show it off at freaking NAMM of all places " - Dewster

In the whole Moog organization, there must be someone who KNEW that the instrument was unplayable.. By the time of NAMM, Moog inc  knew it was unplayable!

You dont hire a "real, actual player " to demonstrate an unplayable instrument - You get people who cant play any theremin to demonstrate it, and pretend that the reason nobody is playing it is because those demoing it cannot play!

And perhaps the theremin is the only instrument in the world for which this scam could work - Those who can play getting befuddled and thinking the racket they are hearing is because (a) the "theremini-ist" cant play (b) making allowances for the chaos at the show (c) getting thrown by the auto-tuning (d) being impressed by the sounds on first hearing (e) Being blinded by the Moog label.

And even thereminists who could play theremins and were briefly exposed to the toy got befuddled, and in their excitement probably put any "difficulties" down to the different nature of the beast - thinking it just needed to be tuned for them, or they would be able to play it when they were familiar with it... The fact that they couldn't play a tune on it was put down to their inexperience with it.  Nobody, in their wildest horror fantasy, could have believed that Moog inc could dump such a pile of shit onto the market - this realization only happened when they got one for themselves!

Nobody could get away with dumping a 100ms latency keyboard on the market - and no company could get anyone who could play such a keyboard except for drones - And the possibility of anyone actually playing a 100ms E-Field instrument is far lower (moving close to infinite improbability ;-).

Well "Hi" again lads and lasses. It is sometime since I last came to site so decided to see what the membership thought of the Theremini as I've read a bit in the press. Well, it makes me smile to see the flashing banner advert up on the top right of 'our' forum header advertising it............ and then to read all about as in it is a toaster or sandwich maker!!!

My thoughts for what they are worth? I assume Moog's sales of Etherwaves are declining since the loss of Bob. Moog management wanted to jump back into more sales with the modern generation of iphone/ipad/ipod.i can't-play-any-instrument-but-want-instant-gratification brigade. So hence the Theremini. Modern styling will appeal to some especially those that regard a natural material such as wood as so retro it's almost SteamPunk.

Well, I like the wooden case but respect that it's a bit boxy & like something from HG Wells' "Time Machine" so may well be regarded as a granddad's elongated cigar box by others. It really though is about the sound capability and by the sounds of it (pun intended) the new Moog isn't up to it? What a wasted opportunity.

"What a wasted opportunity" - ChrisC

Oh yes -

I agree with you - and the original damning of the instrument for its looks / style (which I fully participated in ;-) was probably unfortunate, you are probably right - it may not appeal to many of us, but it could well appeal to young-uns..

If the instrument had been playable, if it had been a theremin, the course of (the) theremin world would have altered irreversibly probably in a positive direction.

Putting an unplayable toy on the market - A toy which doesn't even qualify as a toy theremin - will impact hugely on interest in the theremin, IMO its worse (by far) than merely a "wasted opportunity", its a terrorist attack on Bob Moog and the theremin community he was largely responsible for creating.
