Theremin Performance in Knoxville, TN

The East Tennessee ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter is bringing the SIGGRAPH Traveling Art Show to Knoxville. (We are the Graphics Special Interest Group of the Association for Computing Machinery, the principal professional association of computer scientists.)

The Traveling Art Show is the best of computer art, juried from hundreds of submissions worldwide. It helps expose people around the world to the art collected at the SIGGRAPH Annual Conference's art shows. Each odd-numbered year's show travels for two years after the completion of the Conference, stopping at universities, festivals, and musuems.

The Show will be on view at Ewing Gallery on the UT Campus, June 14 - July 2. It has been at major venues around the world, but this is the first time it has been to Tennessee.

The Opening Night Reception will be Friday, June 11, 6pm. WUOT's (recently retired) Norris Dryer will be Master of Ceremonies.

Entertainment will be provided by the Dennis Dow Jazz Quartet, along with thereminist Paul Wise.

At 7:20pm, Oak Ridge National Lab's Stewart Dickson (Visualization Researcher) will give a presentation entitled "The Tactilization of Cyberspace." Stewart will also exhibit some of his own artworks.

Admission is free for both the Reception (June 11) and the Exhibit (June 14 - July 2).

This is World-Class art, and it would appeal to anyone interested in art and/or computers.

The Traveling Art Show was recently at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and you can see visuals of some of the pieces (click on "Art Gallery: 2D Works") at http://www.clevelandart.org/private/tas/html/

For Ewing Gallery info (including parking), call Cindy Spangler at 974-3200.

Entertainment for the Opening Night Reception will be provided by the Dennis Dow Jazz Quartet and Paul Wise, a local Thereminist.

Playing the theremin provides several archetypes to the mix, including the infinite resolution of analog, a highly sensitive gestural controller -- and all without touching the instrument!

Paul Wise is a sound artist, videographer, multimedia designer, and Theremin player. His work in computer-assisted learning of languages complements his continuing interest in classic analog soundgear. A veteran of the semi-reclusive art scene of the [Tennessee] valley, Mr. Wise and his Theremin will be the focal point of the ensemble performance.
