Jakub Ciupinski controls drum machines with 2 theremins

Composer Jakub Ciupinski has created a rig with 2 theremins that he uses to trigger drum machines in live performances. He's posted a video on vimeo explaining the setup and demonstrating his control technique.

Ciupinski will perform live on September 16th as part of New Music 101, Metropolis Ensemble's interactive concert on September 16, 2009 at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. If you're anywhere near the Big Apple in September, this sounds like a concert not to be missed!

It's impressive what Jakub does, but...

... in my eyes it's still a sacrilege to misuse such a beautiful musical instrument as a "simple" gesture controller...

funny T., the same would be said of John Cage's work.
still, he changed things forever.

Besides the music created, I figure the diversity and further outreach of theremin playing is worth it!
BTW, you know what our fellow member GordonC does with his antennas, right? :~)

Last year when I saw Gordon performing live, he played experimental music on his Etherwave Standard, but in the classical way...

BTW: John, didn't you get my email?

Do you consider the Moog Ethervox MIDI theremin to be a sacrilege?

No, I don't consider the Ethervox as a sacrilege. Perhaps I couldn't express clearly my thoughts due to my weak English capabilities, but here's another try:

The "controlling by gestures" is only a part of the things which make a theremin. Another part which I consider at least so important because it makes its unique instrumental character is the capability to produce continuous pitch over a big range and to play infinite legato, be it in the classical way with "direct" heterodyning, in moderner ways via control voltage and a VCO (Series 91) or via a cv or frequency to midi converter(Ethervox), as long as the result presents no loss of the above cited factors.

So what I consider a sacrilege is not using all parts of this wonderful instrument, especially not its tonal character but using it only as a "trigger" for sound snippets. There exist simple circuits and devices which allow to do so, no need to sterilize a Etherwave or Ethervox for that. Using a German proverb I would say that's casting pearls before swine.

Ah, Thierry, you did not see me at Hands Off 2007. I arranged two etherwaves (complete with echo boxes and amps) in an open V shape, so that I could control the volume loop of both, or either, with my hips, and reach forwards and outwards to the pitch rods with my arms.

The interactions of the two theremins were..... complex.

I agree it is wrong to use it as a simple gestural controller. It is quite clearly a most sophisticated gestural controller and should be used as such.
