Pencil Theremin

Inspired by the theremin, Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum at the MIT Media Lab have created a small sound circuit that can be attached to a pencil of paintbrush and will play a variable pitch when the drawing or wet paint is touched and the pitch can actually be controlled by your finger's position on the paper.

This little device can definitely spark some new ideas in your sketching! Their video shows some of the creative and playful results from having a theremin on your drawing stick.

This little device has technically nothing to do with a theremin. It is neither touchless / gesture / space controlled, nor has it two heterodyning oscillators. It is just a simple RC audio oscillator whose frequency is determined by the external and variable resistance of for example a carbon line or a fluid. So it may be called a very basic Tannerin but never a Theremin.

Very true, it is only "Inspired by the theremin", but any friend of Lev's is a friend of mine.
