Moog Theremin T-Shirts

It was almost a year ago that I mentioned Augusto Triani on TW's front page for the first time, an Italian who invests much into the revival of the Theremin Cello. He builds wonderful housings for these instruments but first he had not much luck in finding an adequate circuit. There are some videos on YouTube where he or Italian Thereminist Valeria Sturba present different working prototypes but the timbres one could hear was not always convincing. Thus I was asked by Augusto if I could make it better. I thought that I could. But then, things were not as easy as I thought. Building a Theremin with capacitive control and heterodyning is one thing. Building a Theremin Cello with a resistive ribbon controller is another thing. My first attempt went directly into trash before the circuit was really ready. But now I'm proud to publish a positive status update:

"After long months of designing the circuit for the theremincello, rejecting a almost finished version for linearity problems, making simulations in CAD, wiring modules wildly on breadboard, I am now at a point where the circuit is ready and working. Now I am creating the definitive and optimized layout for the circuit board."

The new (purely analogue) circuit will allow to play 5 linear octaves on the ribbon controller, starting with the low C like a classic Cello. A register switch allows to shift either one octave lower or one octave higher which gives a total pitch range of 7 octaves and allows to play most pieces in a comfortable hand position. A rotary knob allows fine tuning of /- 3 halftones. There are 4 timbres among them the player can select: A bright and a soft string timbre, and a bright and a soft woodwind timbre. A special circuit part makes an attempt to make all timbres more "organic", somewhat more rough in the lower register but becoming a little smoother in the middle and high register. A filter switch with 4 positions allows a further gradual smoothing of the very highest frequencies.

Below are already a few sound samples, just 4 octaves out of the 7, with the filter switch set to off. You'll find a surprise among these audio files, because you will hear for the very first time a "pizzicato" emulation from a Theremin Cello, triggered by an extra button.

Augusto's birthday is on March, 31st and I hope to have a working final release of the circuit on a well designed circuit board for him until then.

DORIT CHRYSLER "A futuristic Lotte Lenya as well as a disciplined technician and superb musician" (WSJ)
"Imagine if Marianne Faithfull and Nikola Tesla had a love child, with Jane Birkin as the nanny and Bjork as the wayward Girl Scout Leader!" Ann Magnuson, Paper Magazine
Austrian born composer/musician Dorit Chrysler has presented her work at Lincoln Center, Coachella Festival, World Trade Center, Roskilde Festival, The Venice Biennale, Vienna Konzerthaus, Moogfest & CBGB's - she is a featured Moog Music artist and her contemporary electronic compositions have taken her around the world, including concerts in Brazil, Japan, Russia & Australia. Having released several records, she has also written sound tracks for TV and Cinema, as well as for visual artists such as Jesper Just. Other collaborators include Elliott Sharp, JG Thirlwell, Anders Trentemoeller, The The & Gibby Haynes. Dorit produced and curated the 10 piece Theremin Orchestra at the Disney Hall of Los Angeles.  Her latest record, produced by Anders Trentemøller, has just been released to much critical acclaim.
BENJAMIN ICKIES As the conductor of This Ambitious Orchestra, Benjamin Ickies has been waving his hands in the air since 2004. Adding the theremin to that physical vocabulary was a natural step and has since performed all over New York City at venues including le Poisson Rouge, Lincoln Center and Joe's Pub. Trained in composition and accordion by his mentor William Schimmel, Ickies has dedicated his career to expanding the scope of the instruments and genres with which he works.
JOE MCGINTY has played with the The Psychedelic Furs, The Ramones, Nada Surf, Ryan Adams and many others. He is the founder of the Loser's Lounge tribute series, currently residing here at Joe's Pub. He owns a vintage keyboard studio in Brooklyn.  More info at www.joemcginty.com
SCOTT ROBINSON  One of today's most wide-ranging instrumentalists, Scott Robinson has been heard on tenor sax with Buck Clayton's band, on trumpet with Lionel Hampton's quintet, on alto clarinet with Paquito D'Rivera's clarinet quartet, and on bass sax with the New York City Opera. On these and other instruments including theremin and ophicleide, he has been heard with a cross-section of jazz's greats representing nearly every imaginable style of the music, from Braff to Braxton. Scott has been heard numerous times on film, radio and television, and his discography now includes more than 200 recordings. His releases as a leader have garnered five-star reviews from Leonard Feather, Down Beat Magazine and other sources worldwide, and have appeared in many "Best of the Year" lists. Scott's collaborators on disc have included Frank Wess, Hank Jones, Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, and Bob Brookmeyer, and he has been a member of Maria Schneider's Orchestra for twenty years. Scott recently released Bronze Nemesis, a CD featuring 12 compositions based on the exploits of 1930s pulp adventure hero Doc Savage. This project, ten years in the making, was greeted with extensive praise in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Down Beat and elsewhere.
